Mrs. Anusiya, 55 years female came to MIOT on 15th December 2017 with severe pain in both her knee regions. She is a perfect housewife, had always stood as a huge pillar of strength to her husband and her children.
For the past 4yrs, she had been suffering from knee pain. She was very ignorant about it because it did not affect her daily activities. But as years passed, she started experiencing difficulty in walking, climbing stairs and squatting. The last 10days, her pain was severe and that is what brought her to MIOT.
Approach to MIOT:
At MIOT, she was examined by the orthopaedic surgeon and was adviced for X-rays. She was diagnosed with Tri-compartmental arthritis of both knees, with more severity in her right. Her case was transferred to the Knee replacement specialist. On further examination her diagnosis was confirmed and she was advised for Total Knee replacement surgery for the right knee.
Osteoarthritis affects the knee joint more than any other joint. The knee joint contains four bones—femur, tibia, patella, and fibula—and three compartments. Osteoarthritis can affect one, two, or all three of those compartments. When all three are affected, it is called TRI-COMPARTMENTAL OSTEOARTHRITIS.
KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY can be performed as a partial or a total knee replacement. In general, the surgery consists of replacing the diseased or damaged joint surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic components shaped to allow continued motion of the knee.
Recovery:
She underwent Total Knee Replacement (Arthroplasty) Right side on 20.01.2018. Her left knee was not as bad as her right, so the Doctors preferred to wait. Her postoperative period was uneventful. From the next day she was actively mobilized with Physiotherapy. 1 week post surgery, she was able to walk without any support. At 1 month’s review, she was able to do all activities that seemed difficult to her earlier.
