Ms. Aarthi Mangalam, 37yrs lady came to MIOT in February 2015 with complaint of obesity. The only child in their family, she had done her Masters in Psychology. Being the Trainee Manager of a company, she had to train more than 100 employees from 54 branches. She faced a lot of criticism from her subordinates and was even denied for jobs due to her Obesity.
Fighting obesity from her childhood, she had tried all possible means to lose weight, but nothing gave her results. She reached a point where she thought there can be nothing done about it. Later, during November 2014, she met with a mild accident that resulted in a ligament tear on her right leg. The ligament tear took a really longer time to heal and the doctors said it was because of her over weight.
Desperate to find a solution, she googled to find answers and it was at that time, she found about the different weight loss treatment available at MIOT. She already had a good impression about MIOT as her friend underwent Knee surgery here. She knew that there was good one to one care provided to all the patients here. She met the Surgical Gastroenterologist at MIOT, who explained about Bariatric surgery and its benefits. But on discussion with her family, her father objected the idea of her daughter getting under the knife. She was also not financially strong, so she decided to opt out of surgery for now.
By Jan 2015, her father passed away due to Diabetes and Heart attack. So she underwent a medical check-up, which showed she was diabetic. Her mom wanted some remedy and Aarthi was not ready to take medicines for diabetes all her life. This was when Aarthi realised that she can no longer tolerate obesity and took a decision in the next 20days to go ahead with surgery.
She and her mom came to MIOT to meet the doctor again. The discussion happened for about one and half hours as the Doctor explained the entire process which gave her a new hope and confidence. Her mom was worried, but with hesitation agreed to the surgery. In March 2015, she underwent gastric Bypass surgery.
GASTRIC BYPASS is surgery in which stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower “remnant” pouch and then the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both. It helps you lose weight by changing how your stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat. After the surgery, your stomach will be smaller. You will feel full with less food. The food you eat will no longer go into some parts of your stomach and small intestine that absorb food. Because of this, your body will not get all of the calories from the food you eat.
Post Surgery:
After 4 days of surgery, she was discharged. In 2 weeks, she re-joined her work. In a month post surgery, she lost 15kgs. There was extra fat and loose skin for which she underwent a cosmetic surgery. There were no diet restrictions. For improving her lifestyle, she started cycling daily and swimming twice a week. She was 126 before surgery and now (2 yrs and 8 months) she is 63kgs. She is very healthy and fit with no side effects post surgery.
For the last 2yrs, she is free from Diabetes.
Her transition after surgery boosted her confidence to a level which made her participate in an International Public Speaking Competition and even win it. Now she is the Training Manager for Leadership programs in one of the leading IT firm, training Directors, Program managers and top level officials on capacity building and motivating them to lead & reach their goals.
I was surprised to read that she was discharged only four days after surgery! This is amazing. My best friend is looking into getting bariatric surgery. I will let her know this. She would love to hear it.
